Piano Scaling: Only with Thumb/Pinky?
Hello!
I recently started taking piano lessons and my music teacher, who has already tought me how to scale in C Major, has also asked me to try the following which I call "Scaling with just my thumb and pinky".
Basically, with only my right hand, I place my thumb above the C of a first octave and my pinky (5th finger) above the C of the following octave. Then, I have to try to hit the two notes, at the same time, from a distance off the keys and keep going up the octaves like that, only using my thumb and pinky...
What is that for? :S
and is there a special name for it? :S
It's called playing octaves, and the reason is to get you used to the feel for exactly how far apart an octave is under your hand. Eventually you won't have to look at your hands to figure out if your fingers are a seventh or an octave apart before playing.
