Red Narra (Pterocarpus indicus) is the national tree of the Philippines and is native to several parts of Asia like Vietnam, Indonesia, Burma, Thailand, and northern Australasia. It comes from the Pea Family (Fabacea or Leguminosae). It is also known by many different names in different parts of the globe: Asana, Burmese Rosewood, Kaibocca Wood, Tnug, Sonokembang, Sena, Angsana, Andaman Redwood, etc, are some of the more common names.
The same tree produces the breathtaking Amboyna Burl. The height of the tree is about 40 m. and the width of the trunk spans some 2 m. All around the tree, you will on many occasions find buttresses extending outwardly and upwards. It is a very hard, dense, and heavy wood.
The most common colors of the hardwood are deep orange red, rose, reddish tan, and in some places it is even said to be purple. If you hold up a piece of this exotic wood to the sun, you will be able to discern the change in its appearance at different angles of light. Due to an inherent quality of the wood cells, this wood becomes a beautiful opalescent color when placed in water.
